Membership Applications

To apply for Cognitive Sciences Center membership in any of the following categories, please attach the requested documents (in MS Word© .doc or .docx format) to an email addressed to Cindy Marceau, cogsci@umn.edu.  Recommendations should be sent in electronic form directly from the recommenders to Cindy Marceau, with the applicant's name and desired membership level in the subject line. Category descriptions may be found in Section II of the Membership Handbook:  Center Membership and Administration.

Statement of interest:  Your statement of interest should include your scientific involvement in cognitive science.  In addition, you should describe your anticipated involvement in and contribution to the Center for Cognitive Sciences, such as committee membership and attending colloquia and events.  This letter should address why you want to join the community of the Center. Please include your name and the type of membership for which you are applying (i.e. pre- doctoral full member, faculty affiliate member) in the header.

Endorsement Letters: Letters of endorsement for full membership should be a large paragraph to a full page in length detailing the reasons the applicant would make a good member of the Center, stating the endorser’s knowledge of the applicant’s interest, work, or research in the area of cognitive science, and how the endorser has come to know the applicant’s work.

Undergraduate Member: :  

  • An academic transcript, and a CV as possible
  • A statement of interest (see description above)
  • Letter of endorsement from one Faculty Member of the Center, emphasizing the student's research experience(s)/interest(s)

Predoctoral Affiliate, Postdoctoral Affiliate, and Faculty Affiliate

  • A curriculum vitae
  • Written nomination by one Member of the Center

Predoctoral Member, and Postdoctoral Member

  • A curriculum vitae
  • A statement of interest (see description above)
  • Letters of endorsement from two Faculty Members of the Center

Faculty Member:

  • A curriculum vitae
  • A statement of interest (see description above)
  • Letter of endorsement from two Faculty Members of the Center, at least one of whom is a current Executive Council member.
