Interdisciplinary Training Program in Cognitive Science

 Program Evaluation

Mechanisms used for program evaluation.

1. External Review Committee

  • Marty Banks (Perception and Action)

  • Nora Newcombe (Learning and memory)

  • Richie Davidson (Emotion).

The External Committee’s role is to assess the quality of training, particularly its interdisciplinary breadth, and recommend improvements in the training program. The committee will be asked to attend the Spring Research Day in Years 2 and 4, and meet with program students and faculty on the following day.  The committee will be asked to provide a brief written report, evaluating our program, and providing recommendations for improvement.

2. Trainee Feedback

At the end of each year, student progress will be evaluated.  Students will complete a program evaluation with an open-ended survey.  Each student will meet with Dan Kersten or another member of the program faculty other than their advisors.

3. Quantitative Metrics

We will establish a database to keep track of measures of productivity such as numbers of trainee pubs or conference presentations, minority or disabled students recruited, Ph.D.'s granted based on research funded or fostered by the program, placement of Ph.D.'s in cognitive science research, seminars taught or colloquia held that would not have occurred otherwise and number of attendees at those events.
