 REU 2008 - Mentor abstract

Child Development

In my research lab we study cognitive and social development of preschool children. I am particularly interested in children’s self-control (executive functioning), understanding of other people’s thoughts and feelings (theory of mind), and symbol systems including pretend play and language. We investigate the ways in which these skills are inter-related and influenced by both nature (e.g., brain development and genes) and nurture (e.g., parenting and culture). Current research projects that my students and I are working on include: measurement of self-control in preschoolers; using symbols to help children with self-control; bilingualism (Korean-English) and cognitive development; role play and imaginary companions; culture (Chinese) and theory of mind; neural correlates of executive function using EEG/ERP measurement; impulsive eating in early childhood; and parenting influences on the development of self-control. Summer students would assist on various aspects of one or more of these projects, such as recruiting families, observing and recording children’s behavior, and potentially testing children.
