Speech perception in infants.
Eimas, P.D., Siqueland, E.R., Jusczyk, P., & Vigorito, J. (1971)
Science Vol 171 (3968), 303-306

Nominator's statement

This was a seminal piece of work that inspired an entire field of infant speech perception. Many important conclusions about language development rest on an understanding of early prelinguistic sensitivities to the linguistic environment, which is elucidated in this study. This paper is a point of departure for a substantial amount of future research that has furthered these findings in making discoveries about phonological development, speech segmentation, language comprehension and bilingualism.
