- Nominator's statement
- Land's retinex theory of lightness and color constancy was one of the first computational models of an important form of perceptual constancy. In addition to the theory, Land's interesting demonstrations of combining images with sparse color to produce rich color experience provided a major challenge to standard theories of color vision. Of course, Land's personal story of entrepreneur, scientist, and genious is intriguing in its own right.
