Pattern recognition by machine
Selfridge, O. and Neisser, U. (1960)
Scientific American, 203, 60-68.

Nominator's statement

This was one of the earliest and most influential models of pattern recognition, and was known as the "pandemonium" model. It's elements were the "feature demons" that shouted out when they detected specific features in the image. This paper had a major influence on both machine-based pattern recognition and on perceptual and cognitive models of pattern recognition.
