Nominator's statement

This is the most comprehensive of several published accounts of the study of the acquisition of exceptional digit-span skill by the student athlete Steve Falloon. This is a foundational study for modern understanding of the acquisition of exceptional memory skills because it is one of the first to document (and provide an empirically supported theoretical account of) the entire process from normal to world's best" over 200 hours of practice. It is a seminal example of the "demystification of talent" which has been such a major part of the expertise literature in the last quarter of the century.
