Cognition in the Wild
Hutchins, E (1995)
Cambridge, Mass: MIT Press
- Nominator's statement
- It might be useful to analyze how distributed cognizers interact, but I doubt that what is going on inside their heads is all that much like what is going on outside them. And what IS distirbuted inside their heads is not cognizers, but dumb processes...
comments
- An excellent application of the computation model to a real-life' situation. It is also a clear, plausible model of distributed cognition.
- This book makes an important contribution by conceiving cognition as a set of activities distributed across individual and artifacts. A must for this list!
- I second this nomination. Hutchins' manuscript is the classic reference for "everyday cognition" research.
