Thematic proto-roles and argument selection
Dowty, D. (1991)
Language, 67, 547-619
- Nominator's statement
- Dowty addresses a problem which has been extensively studied in linguistics: how the arguments of verbs are assigned grammatical roles. He doesn't attempt to provide some oversimplistic theory, but rather presents a thorough discussion of the factors bearing upon argument selection, which has guided work on this important question since the appearance of the paper.
