The Psychological Reality of the Phoneme
Sapir, E. (1949)
In D. G. Mandelbaum (Ed.), Selected Writings of Edward Sapir in Language, Culture and Personality. Berkeley, CA: University of California Press.

Nominator's statement

This paper is the first to clearly articulate the very controversial view that language specific coding decisions alter or determine perception. Sapir claims that the phoneme, an abstract general category of sound, is psychologically real and categorizes perception.
