Mind, Self, and Society from the standpoint of a social behaviorist
Mead, G. H. (1934)
Chicago: University of Chicago Press

Nominator's statement

This is a touchstone explication of the genesis of mind and a sense of self out of social conditions. One of the early explanations of how language "precedes" mind (evolutionarily, developmentally), couched in behavioral but not simply behavioristic terms.
