The Mind's Staircase: Exploring the conceptual underpinnings of children's thought and knowledge.
Case, R. (1992)
Hillsdale, NJ: Lawerence Erlbaum Associates

Nominator's statement

This book is the culmination of a longstanding research program which examines empirically as well as qualitatively the model of cognitive development associated with neo-Piagetian, Robbie Case. The application and explanatory power of this general theory in multiple domains (e.g., spatial, narrative, numerical, etc) give strength and substance to Dr. Case's well-accepted postulation of "central conceptual structures", and the hierarchical structure of cognitive development in children. The theory and the book have generated research agendas around the world and is a continuing framework for scholarly discussion.
