How To Do Things With Words
Austin, J. L. (1962)
Harvard University Press

Nominator's statement

From his lectures at Harvard in 1955, this started the entire notion of speech as a kind of action (e.g., speech acts), and caused a great deal of subsequent work to be launched in philosophy, AI, and cognitive science. Speech Acts are still used today as a useful formalism, though there continues to be disagreements as to how many and what kind of perfermatives should be required.
