Intentional Systems in Cognitive Ethology: The Panglossian Paradigm Defended
Dennett, D. (1983)
The Behaviorial and Brain Sciences 6 (1983) 343-90
- Nominator's statement
- A classic essay that describes Dennett's theory of intentionality. We are able to understand each other in our daily interactions via the use of "folk" concepts such as belief, desire, intention and expectation. Dennett recasts these concepts in terms of a predictive strategy that is adopted to understand behavior. His theory brings these "folk" concepts out of the mystical realm and into the realm of science.
comments
- While it is unclear which work of Dennett's is best to nominate, I will "second" this nomination. It is important also to include something which does take an ethological view of cognition.
